1. Why are there two schemes? (Edenred scheme & Mastercard scheme)?
This innovation allows some retailers who could not accept the Edenred card in the past (due to their terminal) to accept it now.
It also meets users’ expectations, who wish to use their Edenred card with their smartphone, smartwatch or mobile wallet. The classic Edenred scheme does not enable mobile payment with the Edenred card. Using the Mastercard scheme, this is now possible.
Edenred has equipped 1.9 million users with a hybrid card combining the two technologies.
2. Are mobile payments a niche?
No. Mobile payments have become the norm in Belgium and Europe. Every year, the value of mobile payments increases by 30%, and more than 26% of in-store transactions are already mobile. Over 50% of Belgian people have used mobile payment already in 2025. This behaviour is here to stay and customers expect it.

3. What stays the same, whichever scheme is used?
- Your establishment will continue to be promoted in the Edenred network.
- Transactions are still secure and validated by Edenred.
- The customer pays as usual: Edenred manages the complex technology.
- Contractual terms and conditions are unchanged.
- The Edenred service fees remain the same.
4. What changes when the transaction goes through the Mastercard scheme?
A new player intervenes: your acquirer (Worldline, CCV, etc.). The new process is then as follows:
- Edenred validates the transaction.
- Your acquirer reimburses you, according to the terms of your contract.
- Then, Edenred sends you a separate invoice for the service fees.
In short:
- The reimbursement is made by the acquirer (not by Edenred).
- The Edenred service fees are charged separately, and not deducted from the reimbursement.
5. How does Edenred keep the costs down for retailers?
When possible on the retailer’s terminal, priority is given to the Edenred scheme, which is easier and faster. In that case, you just need to:
- insert the card in the terminal, or
- present the card for a contactless transaction (NFC).
However, some retailers have terminals that do not function with the technology in the classic Edenred scheme. In that case:
- all transactions go automatically via the Mastercard scheme,
- including payments with the physical card.
This situation does not prevent use of the Edenred card: ➡️ on the contrary, the Mastercard scheme actually allows these retailers to accept the Edenred card, which was not possible before.
6. How to know which scheme has been used?
The scheme used depends on the terminal technology and the customer’s payment method:
- If your terminal accepts the Edenred scheme:
- card payments immediately go through the Edenred scheme,
- only mobile payments go through Mastercard.
- If your terminal does not accept the Edenred scheme:
- all transactions go through Mastercard,
- even payments with a physical card.
In any case, you can check:
- transaction details,
- invoices related to Mastercard transactions, in your Merchant Area on MyEdenred.
7. Edenred sends monthly invoices for small amounts. How will this be simplified?
Edenred has developed a solution to reduce the frequency of invoices, in particular for small retailers. This simplification kicked off in February 2026.
8. How to simplify your invoice management and organisation?
The simplest solution is to use direct debit (SEPA). This allows:
- automatic payment,
- less administration,
- full security.
To activate direct debit:
- Download the form (SEPA_Multiproduit_FR_BE_READER.pdf)
- Complete the form
- Send the form to the address shown: accounting-BE@be.edenred.info
Edenred is also developing a process to allow, when facilitated by the retailer’s technology, the automatic deduction of service fees on reimbursements, identical to the classic Edenred scheme.
9. How to make sure that your invoices are paid on time?
There are several tools allowing stress-free management of your invoices and ensuring that none are forgotten. With these, you can easily track your payments and settle them promptly.
Where to find your invoices?
You receive your invoices via several channels to ensure they arrive safely:
- By e-mail, straight to your inbox.
- Via the PEPPOL network, if used in your accounting.
- In your MyEdenred Merchant Area, where all your invoices remain accessible at any time, in order and downloadable.
This triple availability ensures full visibility, even in case of absence, a change of e-mail address or administration overload.
How to avoid missing the payment?
A number of good practices allow you to simplify your daily management:
- Activate direct debit (SEPA): This is the easiest and safest solution. The payment is made automatically when due, without you having to do anything. You therefore avoid reminders, late payment and the mental strain of monitoring deadlines. (link point 8)
- Regularly check your Merchant Area: All your invoices are centralised here. At a glance, you can check that everything is fine. (link MyEdenred)
- Create a reminder in your accounting system: If you prefer to pay manually, an automatic reminder in your software or agenda can help you not to forget anything.
- Check that your contact details are up to date: This ensures that invoices and important notifications are properly received.
Why is this important?
On-time payment:
- avoids reminders and extra formalities,
- guarantees the continuity of your Edenred services,
- allows you to focus on your activity rather than on paperwork.
10. Do mobile payments have a big impact on my costs?
The impact is limited. Your acquirer invoices acquisition charges, but their intervention is still minimal. Therefore, the additional cost remains limited compared to the benefits you receive (fast checkout and added customer satisfaction).
11. Can Edenred compensate this additional cost?
No. Mobile payments through Mastercard also incur additional costs for Edenred. Edenred has chosen not to pass these on to retailers.
12. If Edenred and the retailer are absorbing the additional costs, why propose the Mastercard scheme at all?
Because customers are demanding mobile payment. It is no longer an option: it is a modern standard. Accepting this means:
- avoiding customer frustration,
- improving the modern image of your business,
- increasing your appeal and potentially your turnover.
13. Is my terminal compatible with the new Edenred card?
Yes. The new Edenred card is compatible with all terminals on the market, thanks to the association between Edenred and Mastercard technologies.
However, depending on your terminal:
- either you accept both schemes (Edenred + Mastercard),
- or you accept only the Mastercard scheme.
In both cases: ➡️ you can accept the Edenred card, even if your terminal is not compatible with the classic Edenred scheme. ➡️ An Edenred contract is all you need to join the network and accept the card, both in store and through e‑commerce.
